Berlin – Corona’s exceptional situation has given German stages and cinemas a roller coaster ride. The latest statistics from the Film Promotion Agency (FFA) recently showed that business for cinemas is still not going as well as it used to be. Around 33.2 million tickets were sold in the first half of 2022. It was significantly more than a year ago – when cinemas were largely closed due to the corona virus – but there are still around 20 million fewer tickets than before the crisis.
According to the German Theater Association, the situation in theaters is different. Some theaters report good occupancy rates, others don’t. But what can be clearly observed: subscription numbers are falling.
Why is that – and where will it lead? Is culture dying, i.e. cultural life with theaters, opera houses, concert halls and cinemas?
