Is the Conflict in Ukraine Straining Western Military Industries?

A member of the ruling Conservative Party in Britain, Babak Imamian, considered in an interview with “Sky News Arabia” that the lack of equipment for both sides in the Ukraine war prevents a major escalation in it.

Imamian’s remarks came after a report by the American network “CNN” showed a decline in the stock of various ammunitions in the United States, Britain and other Western countries, with their continued great support for Ukraine.

He added that the US decision to send cluster bombs to Ukraine came to counter this shortage of ammunition.

As for Britain, it confirmed that it is seeking to increase its production of military ammunition and missiles to meet the existing shortage, by allocating an additional $3 billion for this purpose.

The news report revealed US calls for the leaders of the Ukrainian army to rely less on artillery at this stage, and focus more on joint arms maneuvers, which is a more efficient and sophisticated fighting method.

In the midst of this, the Ukrainian presidential advisor called on the West to send 300 armored vehicles and 80 F-16 fighters to speed up the Ukrainian counterattack, which is not moving quickly yet.

Is the conflict in Ukraine beginning to burden Western military industries? Do these countries have the ability to keep up with the depletion of their military arsenals?

A member of the ruling British Conservative Party and political analyst, Babak Imamian, told Sky News Arabia:

The West must decide whether it wants peace or war. If it wants war, it must be realistic and move to the stage of the war economy, where it spends 10-20 percent of the gross domestic product and accelerates military production. There is a maze in the direction of the Westerners. On the one hand, they want war, but they do not want to pay all the costs. They want to use light weapons that are low in cost, but they are not offensive but rather defensive. Offensive weapons are very expensive and so the West is lagging behind in this matter. Until now, the economy is consumer, as 2 percent of the gross domestic product is allocated to the army and defense, and by the war economy I mean spending 10-20 percent of the gross domestic product on defense affairs, and the West must decide which one to choose. War is costly, requires a lot of equipment, and Western production is not sufficient and not suitable for waging an all-out war. For example, the Ukrainian army needs 20,000 artillery shells per day, while Western production is 50,000 shells per month, and it is difficult to sustain production with the continuation of the war. Due to the lack of equipment, the war will not witness a major escalation. If there was a larger war production, it would have been more ferocious and out of control.

As for Nizar Bush, a political science professor at Moscow State University, he told Sky News Arabia:

The West chose the war with Ukrainian hands, meaning that the Ukrainians are dying. There is an arms lobby in Britain and the United States that benefits from this war, and this affects the livelihoods of the Europeans, because the taxes they pay go to military industrialization. He said that Russia managed to destroy a lot of deadly Western weapons and told the West that your weapons are just scrap. Russia is benefiting from the war by modernizing its military machinery, and there is work around the clock in Russian military factories, and their production is not used in Ukraine, because it is waiting for something greater than this war.
