Because of the comparatively low Corona numbers, Saxony is apparently moving into focus as an alternative venue for the CDU federal party conference in December. As the “Saarbrücker Zeitung” reports, referring to party circles, the Union continues to plan with Stuttgart as the venue. But if the corona situation in the Baden-Württemberg state capital worsens and implementation becomes impossible, relocation to East Germany is being considered.
Dresden and Leipzig in the running
The party conference on December 4th, at which the new CDU chairman is to be elected, could take place in Dresden or Leipzig, according to the report. The CDU wants to make a final decision at its federal board meeting on October 26th, it is said.
Stuttgart had become a corona hotspot at the weekend due to the increasing number of infections. The city passed the important warning level of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days. Other large cities such as Berlin, Frankfurt and Bremen had already risen above this mark.
Five times as many corona cases in Stuttgart as in Leipzig
On Monday, the so-called seven-day incidence according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) was 55.8, in Leipzig it was 11.5, in Dresden it was 26. From the Union it was said that the local Stuttgart authorities were in touch constant contact. So far, the comprehensive hygiene concept still allows implementation.
So far, NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet, ex-parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz and foreign politician Norbert Röttgen have been elected at the party congress. The CDU has already shortened its multi-day meeting to one day because of the corona pandemic.
Already four CDU party congresses in Leipzig
The CDU federal party conference took place last in November 2019 at the New Fair in Leipzig instead of. It was the fourth time since 1990 that the CDU met in the trade fair city – after 1997, 2003 and 2011.
