Is Targeted Advertising Really So Bad? Exploring the Pros and Cons of User Data Collection in Social Media Apps

Compared to other social media apps out there (or were in the case of Twitter), those apps ask little or no information from you. This again shows what Meta is after: your data for ad targeting.

Unpopular opinion: the question is whether the end users really think that is so bad

In the end, a platform just has to be paid for, it has to work out somewhere. Now I find Twitter’s current way of trying to make that happen really ridiculous; but it is a direction. The other option is end-user advertising. As long as you are aware of those targeted campaigns, is that really so bad? If I have to see commercials, I’d rather have advertising tailored to me than completely irrelevant shit.

If you as a user have the choice between a social media platform where you have to pay to use it properly (the current direction of Twitter) and a more traditional revenue model (only targeted advertisements, earning from large users); I don’t know if people choose the paid version en masse. Especially for people who only or mainly consume content and there are really a lot of them.

Ultimately, consuming users want to be on the platform where most of their content can be found, but the willingness to pay for that same content is really low in my opinion. You saw that here on Tweakers with the Plus articles. And then here we have a user group with a kind of ‘bond’ with the platform.
