Is sunscreen dangerous? On social media, people warn that it is bad for you and you can even get cancer. ‘That’s not true,’ says skin researcher Marlies Wakkee of Erasmus MC. ‘It actually protects you against it.’

Why is it good to use sunscreen?
‘A little sun is good for you, but not too much. Your skin can burn. It will heal, but later in life you can get skin cancer. Sunscreen protects you against that. So apply every two hours from spring on sunny days.’
Why do people think sunburn is harmful?
‘Some people think that the cream penetrates your skin very deeply. And that you get cancer. The European Commission was investigating this. They found nothing harmful in sunscreen. So it’s just safe.’
Which sunscreen is best to use?
‘A kid-friendly sunscreen. They are even better tested than the adult versions. There is also no perfume in it. That can sometimes cause allergic reactions.’
Does sunscreen protect you at all?
‘No sunscreen can block all the sun. Even if you go swimming or exercise, you quickly wipe off a layer of sunscreen. Therefore, stay out of the sun during the hottest afternoon hours, regularly seek shade or put on protective clothing. And be aware: sunscreen does not last forever. Buy a new bottle every now and then. In short: be careful and keep applying.’
