Shopping still has to be done with a mouth mask. But what about the cart or the basket? Is that still necessary or can you just walk into the store again without it?

“The shopping cart obligation was actually released by the government in May,” says Dieter Snoeck, spokesperson for Aldi. ‘But that decision seems to have fallen between the folds, many people don’t know that. As far as our stores are concerned, we still ask you to use the trolley. It’s still a good way to keep your distance, but we’re no longer making it mandatory.’
It is no longer mandatory at Delhaize. “That has been the case for a while, but we have indeed not communicated explicitly about it,” says spokesman Roel Dekelver. Colruyt only abolished it at the end of July. “From then on, we made all shopping carts available to customers again and they can also enter the store again without a cart,” said spokeswoman Patti Verdoodt. ‘That applies to all our stores, including the Okay, Spar or Bio-Planet. There are no relaxations for disinfecting so-called contact points, so we keep the disinfection columns at the entrance where people can disinfect their hands and the cart.’
The devices that count the number of customers have also been abolished in the meantime. ‘You will still see those devices and screens with us,’ says Dieter Snoeck. ‘But the device itself is no longer switched on, it is no longer necessary to count the number of customers, we still use the screens to communicate with our customers.’
