As part of the Nissan press conference, a video announcement was presented demonstrating the company’s strategy. The video shows various upcoming designs, including cars that have already been revealed, including the Sakura crossover from the Tokyo Auto Show and the Kicks from the New York Auto Show. The video also shows a very boxy car with large roof rails, a vertical tail, truck-like taillights and the distinctive “hump” on the trunk lid that is typical of the Xterra. We’re guessing this is the new Xterra.
Recently, the revival of classic SUVs has become popular among buyers and profitable for automakers, a trend that Nissan is not yet fully participating in. However, after speaking with Vice President and Chief Planner of Nissan Americas, Ponz Pandikuthira, it became known that we may see the return of the Xterra.
While Pandikuthira didn’t confirm Xterra’s return, he said the idea is being actively discussed. He also noted that the new Xterra should be “authentic” and a “serious truck.” This means it shouldn’t just be a Rogue with off-road tires, but something with real cargo capabilities. He also noted that the car should be relatively inexpensive and include modern design elements.
