Question from Mark
Is Nice airport impacted by the ban on short domestic flights that has come into effect?
Good morning Marc,
After publication in Official newspaperthe principle is now as follows: air travel is prohibited if the train journey takes less than 2.5 hours.
A measure, which “is a world first, which is fully in line with the government’s policy of encouraging the use of modes of transport that emit less greenhouse gases” raises Clément Beaune, Minister of Transport.
Some criteria to take into account
However, it is not as simple as it seems and several criteria are taken into account for a flight to be deleted. “The journey must be made between stations serving the same cities as the respective airports concerned” specifies the decree.
However, many airports are located in neighboring municipalities of the big city they serve. Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle, for example, has the TGV station at the airport as its reference. Paris intramural stations are therefore not taken into account.
It is also necessary that “the link (either) provided without changing trains between these stations, several times a day and with a satisfactory service”.
Another criterion put forward by the decree, “the connection must allow more than eight hours of presence on site during the day, throughout the year”.
Every year, “The Minister responsible for civil aviation has an assessment carried out with the aim of determining the air links potentially concerned for which there is a satisfactory alternative rail service. He informs the carriers potentially interested of the air links likely to be prohibited. “
In a few words, only the Paris Orly-Nantes, Orly-Lyon and Orly Bordeaux connections are concerned. No worries therefore, for the moment concerning Nice airport.
Good day!
