Are hiccups a sign of infection corona virus?

A 62-year-old man was rushed to the emergency department after experiencing hiccups for four days, according to the report published in The American Journal of Emergency Medicine in July.

According to Dr. Li, this study was published because the case is unusual.

However, the lung irritation caused by Covid-19 can trigger persistent hiccups, says Neal Shipley, MD, of Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care.

Hiccup It’s basically a spasm that occurs when the phrenic nerve (the nerve that controls the diaphragm muscle) becomes irritated, “says Dr. Shipley.

Thus, irritation can cause persistent hiccups. However, not all cases of hiccups need to be worried.

“We just need to be careful with the assumption that hiccups are the same as Covid-19,” said Dr. Shipley.

Causes persistent hiccups

There are many things that can cause hiccups, but the most common cause is gastrointestinal problems, such as acid reflux, says Dr. Shipley.

Acid reflux is a condition in which gastric acid up into the esophagus causing a burning sensation, which can cause stomach ulcers.

However, gastrointestinal problems can be a side effect of taking certain medications.

Dr. Li suggested that we should see a doctor if we can’t stop hiccups for more than 48 hours.

“If someone comes in with hiccups for four days, I will not ignore it,” he said.

Chronic hiccups can be a sign of an underlying problem such as a tumor, diabetes, or gastrointestinal disorders, according to the Mayo Clinic.

However, if we have been exposed to the coronavirus, don’t practice social distancing, or show more general symptoms such as cough and fever, Dr. Shipley recommends undergoing a Covid-19 test immediately.
