Is it true that green tea and coffee reduce the risk of death due to diabetes? All pages

However, both of them have more benefits, especially for diabetics.

Reported Science Daily, a study published in the BMJ revealed that drinking four or more cups of green tea daily plus 2 or more coffee was associated with a 63 percent lower risk of death for about five years.

People with type 2 diabetes are more susceptible to circulatory diseases, dementia, cancer, and fractures.

Although drugs are increasingly effective for people with type 2 diabetes, lifestyle modifications, such as exercise and diet, remain the cornerstone of treatment.

Several previously published studies have shown that drinking green tea and coffee regularly can provide health benefits due to the various bioactive compounds contained in these drinks.

However, only a few of these studies were conducted on diabetics.

Therefore, the researchers decided to explore the potential impact of green tea and coffee, separately and in combination, on their risk of death.

For the study, researchers tracked the health of 4923 Japanese people (2,790 men, 2,133 women) with type 2 diabetes, a mean age of 66, with an average study duration of more than five years.

All of them were listed in The Fukuoka Diabetes Registry, a prospective multicentre study looking at the effect of drug treatment and lifestyle on the age of patients with type 2 diabetes.

They then filled out a food and beverage questionnaire containing 58 items, and included questions about how much green tea and coffee they consumed each day.

They also provide a wealth of background information on lifestyle factors, such as regular exercise, smoking, alcohol consumption, and nighttime sleep.

Measurements of height, weight and blood pressure are also taken, as are blood and urine samples to check for potential underlying risk factors.

A total of 1,143 participants drank a cup of green tea a day and 1,384 drank 2-3 glasses, while 963 participants drank one cup daily, and 1660 drank 2 cups or more.

During the monitoring period, 309 people (218 men, 91 women) died.

The main causes of death are cancer and cardiovascular disease.

The risk of death is lower

Compared to those who did not drink at all, those who drank one or both had a lower risk of dying from any cause.

Drinking up to one cup of green tea daily was associated with a 15 percent lower risk of death, while drinking two to three cups was associated with a 27 percent lower risk.

Meanwhile, participants who regularly consumed four or more cups of green tea every day were associated with a 40 percent lower risk of death.

Among coffee drinkers, those who drank up to one cup per day had a 12 percent lower risk of death, 19 percent lower one cup a day, and two or more cups 41 percent lower.

The risk of death was even lower for those who drank green tea and coffee every day, at more than 50 percent.

In fact, those who consumed a combination of four or more cups of green tea and two or more cups of coffee per day were associated with a 63 percent reduction in their risk of death.

Unfortunately, this study is an observational study, and therefore cannot determine the cause.

The researchers raised several caveats, including reliance on subjective assessments of the amount of green tea and coffee drunk.

The researchers also did not collect information on other potentially influential factors, such as household income and education.

They added that the green tea available in Japan may not be the same as that found elsewhere.

According to them, the biology behind these observations is not fully understood.

Green tea contains several antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, including phenols and theanine, as well as caffeine.

While coffee also contains many bioactive components, including phenols.

In addition to its potentially harmful effects on the circulatory system, caffeine is thought to alter insulin production and sensitivity.

“This prospective cohort study shows that greater consumption of green tea and coffee is significantly associated with a reduction in all-cause death, but that the effect may be additive,” the investigators concluded.
