Is it true that Burning the Bodies of Patients Covid-19 Can Kill Corona Virus? Page all

KOMPAS.com – The statement from the Minister of the Interior Tito Karnavian that said that the best handling of Covid-19’s body by being burned was reaping various reactions in the community.

Although finally clarifying his statement, Tito had said that the best handling of Covid-19’s body was by burning it.

Because in theory the virus will die too.

“The best, I’m sorry I am Muslim, in theory the best is burned, because the virus will die too,” Tito said as quoted by a webinar from Puspen Kemendagri, Thursday (07/23/2020).

Then is it true that the virus will die if the body of a Covid-19 patient was burned?

Epidemiologist from Griffith University Dicky Budiman dismissed this.

“Study in (journal) Lancet and also a statement from WHO stating that the issue of cremation is safer than being buried is a myth, “he told Kompas.com, Friday (24/7/2020).

He continued, that also happened in various pandemics before.

Patients were burned or cremated, he added depending on the rules made by each country.

He mentioned that, like Sri Lanka and China, they have forced their citizens to do this.

“Ebola which is more infectious and easily transmitted through a corpse alone does not have to be cremated,” he added.

Dicky explained that during the Ebola outbreak, about 20 percent of the cases occurred as a result of transmission through a corpse.

That’s because in Africa there are rituals to touch, kiss, and hug the body before it is buried.

Then finally WHO banned contact with the body and changed screening guidelines during the outbreak.

Contacted separately, the epidemiologist at Yogyakarta’s Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Bayu Satria Wiratama also said the same thing.

“Almost all countries are not burned. Unless the culture requires it,” he told Kompas.com, Friday (24/7/2020).

He said, according to guidelines issued by the WHO, treatment of the corpses of Covid-19 patients the most important thing is to make sure the body is well coated.

With that no fluid comes out of the body and minimizes contact.

“It does not have to be burned, according to WHO guidelines, it can be buried as usual and more to the local culture,” he said.
