Is it true that bras that use wires trigger breast cancer?

Jakarta: There is a myth that says that the use of bras with wires can cause breast cancer. Research by The International Agency for Research on Cancer shows that the new incidence of breast cancer worldwide ranks first with about 2.3 million new cases and 680 thousand deaths.

Meanwhile, Indonesia is in the highest rank with new cases approaching 66 thousand. With a death rate of more than 22,000 people in 2020.

“A decent bra to wear is a bra that doesn’t put too much pressure on the breasts, or one that isn’t too tight,” said Prof. Dr. dr. Ami Ashariati, Sp.PD-KHOM, FINASIM, Internal Medicine Specialist (Hematology and Medical Oncology), in the Indonesian Cancer Foundation Webinar.

According to Prof. Ami, the use of a bra that is not too tight is the main principle in choosing a bra. If there is a wire, it’s just a support. Do not directly hit the breast.

“So the buffer has no effect. And some people may like to use wire and some do not,” said Prof. Ami.

“The use of a bra that is too tight is expected not to press the breast. This is because a bra that presses too much on the breast can change the properties of cells. Especially if it is used for a long time or for a long time. If it is used continuously, it will certainly change,” he explained. Prof. Amy.

However, according to Prof. Ami, in causing breast cancer itself can be caused by various risk factors. These include age, genetics, menstruation early, use of hormonal contraception, lifestyle unhealthy and obese.

More Prof. Ami appealed to the public to prevent breast cancer by doing BSE and early detection of breast cancer.

“Because cancer can be cured if found at an early stage, and immediately consult a doctor if there are symptoms. In addition, it is accompanied by the application of a healthy lifestyle, eating nutritious food, quitting smoking, not consuming alcohol, exercising regularly, and don’t forget to avoid stress and get enough rest,” he concluded.
