Jakarta –
Recently, appeals have appeared in several schools in Jakarta regarding the prevention of Singapore flu or Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) and mumps. Both of these diseases are said to be on the rise in Jakarta.
Lumps occur as a result of infection with the paramyxovirus class of viruses which cause the parotid glands, which produce saliva, to become inflamed and swollen. Symptoms may include swollen cheeks, pain when chewing and swallowing, high fever, dry mouth, and headache.
One treatment that is believed to cure lumps is using blau or bulao and vinegar. Is that true?

The head of IDAI’s Disease and Tropical Disease Coordination Operation Unit, Dr. Anggraini Alam, SpA(K) said that Indonesian local wisdom or belief is said to be able to handle obstacles among the society.
“Blau is Indonesian local wisdom. Our parents still want to say not to be close to people who have lumps, because they can be infected with droplets when they talk,” explained Dr. Anggraini in the IDAI webinar, Friday ( 23/8/2024).
“For vinegar, probably because it is thought to soften tissue. In fact, there is no cure for lumps or bumps,” he continued.
Dr. explained Anggraini that an obstruction or parotetis epidemica causes the parotid gland, that is the gland in front of the ear, to be infected. It prevents the saliva from flowing out so it becomes faster and painful.
Mumps is highly contagious. This is confirmed if lumps appear on the right cheek, within two days it can spread to other parts, up to the lips.
