Jakarta –
Breast milk allergy in infants is a problem of breastfeeding that is often worried about mothers. Then is it true that babies can experience allergies due to breast milk?
Allergies can indeed be experienced by a breastfeeding baby. However, the cause is not breast milk, but the food the mother consumes during breastfeeding.
“Natural protein in breast milk is not much, so it can’t trigger allergies in babies. However, babies can be allergic to the food their mother consumes,” said a pediatrician, Dr. Harvey Karp, reported Happiest Baby.
In 1983, Swedish scientists proved that bayi colic will not experience any problems when consuming mother’s milk. However, they can be allergic to proteins that pass through the intestines, then into the mother’s bloodstream and into breast milk.
“Within 30 minutes after the mother eats, a small amount of protein will flow to the stomach, then to the breast. The protein can last for hours there,” said Karp.
Allergies are an overreaction of the immune system as it tries to protect itself from foreign proteins. In babies who are allergic to mother’s milk, symptoms are vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, coughing, watery eyes, and swelling on the lips or tongue.

To diagnose this allergy, you can see it from the baby’s reaction after breastfeeding. The most common food allergies are caused by consuming cow’s milk, soybeans, eggs, nuts, wheat and shellfish.
When your little one is allergic to mother’s milk, the doctor will generally apply an elimination diet. This means that mothers are not advised to consume allergenic foods for a certain time.
“It usually takes 3 to 7 days to see if the symptoms improve,” said Karp.
So, breast milk allergy is a myth, Mother. ABOUT naturally does not cause allergies, but acts as protection or immunity to the baby.
Reported by the page of the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI), breast milk contains essential nutrients and is able to overcome infection through phagocytic cell components (destroyers) and immunoglobulins (antibodies). The components of breast milk also have a protective effect.
Breast milk contains cells that are important in eliminating germs and is the first protection for the baby’s digestive tract. Just like the immune system in general, breast milk also has a non-specific and specific defense system.
