Alytus city municipality mayor Nerijus Cesiulis shared his thoughts on the future of the Alytus polyclinic building on social networks, raising the question of whether to renovate the old building or build a new one.
The current building of the polyclinic, which is known to every resident of the city of Alytus and, probably, of the Alytus district, was built in the last century – in 1977, so it is not surprising that it is time to renovate it or, if you choose another solution, to build a new one. According to Mayor N. Cesiulis, the polyclinic building has never been renovated during its 47 years of existence. Only the necessary current internal repair works were carried out.
In addition, the building in which the Alytus polyclinic operates belongs to the Alytus district municipality, and was transferred to the Alytus city municipality on the basis of use.
“The people of Alytus have been using this building for many years, but it does not belong to the city of Alytus, but to the municipality of Alytus district. The time has come to decide what we are doing: renovating someone else’s building or building a new one. The renovation of the old polyclinic building would cost about 5 million. euros. Is it worth investing in it?” N. Cesiulis invited the people of Aly to consider.
According to N. Cesiulis, the Alytus city municipality plans to build a new, modern polyclinic in the courtyard of the Stasios Kudirkas hospital of Alytus county. A medical campus would be located here, adapted to the convenience of patients and doctors – everything in place, on time and quickly.
“Now, when a person gets sick, you need to go to the family doctor to the polyclinic, from the polyclinic the patient is sent to the hospital for tests, from the hospital the patient returns to the family doctor to the polyclinic… A sick person has a lot of walking to do,” N. Cesiulis testified.
According to the mayor of Alytus, according to preliminary calculations, the construction of a new polyclinic would pay off for the city in 12-14 years. After building a new polyclinic, the city’s public transport routes would also be adjusted. “Minibuses would enter the territory of the medical campus and bring the residents right to the door of the medical facility. It is also planned to expand the amount of parking spaces,” wrote Mayor N. Cesiulis.
The director of the Alytus Polyclinic, Marius Jasaitis, also approved the construction of the new polyclinic building: “Since the building is not a new construction, its technical service, the condition of the pipelines require a lot of costs, we pay huge sums for heating with electricity, we received especially large bills when electricity prices jumped all over the country. We could use the money spent on utility bills for doctors’ salaries and the purchase of medical equipment. We are organizing the inside of the building to the best of our ability to make the patients comfortable and cozy, but the entire building needs to be renovated or another path must be taken – to build a new one.”
According to M. Jasaitis, Alytus is a city of older people, and the polyclinic building has 7 floors, just by reducing the elevator services, it is possible to save money on electricity. This was confirmed by moving many studies from the 7th floor to the first. Perhaps a 2-3 storey building would be enough, it would be both more convenient and cheaper.
“It is also necessary to take into account the fact that the building was designed in 1961 and everything was planned from the point of view of that era. Now everything is changing rapidly, we are digitalizing, so we don’t need so much space anymore. I think that we should not be afraid of a new polyclinic, of course, whether it will appear or not will not be decided by the mayor or the director of the polyclinic, it will be done at the state level. However, from an economic perspective, I am glad that the mayor is raising this issue and will try to solve it somehow, because until now we could neither renovate the building nor build a solar power plant”, said M. Jasaitis, director of the polyclinic.
Funds for the construction of the new polyclinic building are expected to come from the structural funds of the European Union.
