KOMPAS.com – Besides rice, the average Indonesian people choose roti as their breakfast menu.
The reason is simple, bread can be served practically and is filling.
However, bread is easy to mold if not stored properly. If so, the bread must be discarded because it can no longer be consumed.
How to save bread so it doesn’t get moldy? Should it be stored in the refrigerator?
The best place to store bread
If you want to eat bread quickly, keep it on the table, says Margarethe A. Cooper, PhD, assistant professor of practice, Victor P. Smith endowed chair at Food Safety Education, University of Arizona.
“But if you don’t eat the bread right away, especially if the bread is homemade, it’s best to store it in the refrigerator to prevent mold growth.”
Although safe, the refrigerator can cause stale bread
According to Lisa Young, PhD, RDN, nutritionist and professor at New York University, cold temperatures in the refrigerator cause the starch in bread to crystallize and dry out.
As a result, the taste and texture of the bread is no longer fresh or stale.
