Influenza spreads best at zero temperatures and slightly below. At the same time, if a person is cold, this does not mean that it is easier for him to get infected. Elena Zyablova, deputy chief physician of the online health management service Budu, told URA.RU about this.
“Weather conditions have an impact on the spread of the virus. So, the ideal condition for the existence and reproduction of influenza is cold and humidity, characteristic of the end of autumn and the beginning or end of winter. At the same time, in frosts or in the heat, the flu tends to be inactivated, that is, to slow down its spread. The ideal temperature for the flu is around zero degrees Celsius or a little colder,” said Elena Zyablova.
According to her, freezing is not due to the fact that a person easily gets sick. “Influenza spreads easily in the cold season also because during this period people’s immune defenses decrease. Accordingly, the number of people infected with the virus is growing. Also in autumn and winter, people spend more time at home, in rooms where it is easier for the virus to move from one person to another. Hypothermia as such is not the cause of infection with the virus. It affects the immune system and its resistance during the spread of diseases. Freezing can provoke infection with the virus only if it was already somewhere on the mucous membranes, ”the doctor noted.
