An incredible high jump final at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics ended with Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar and Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy winning the gold medal. Yes, two medals.
After an exhausting competition lasting two hours, and having the possibility to participate in a ‘breakthrough’ moment, the pair of athletes could not ‘separate’, recording both the best distances: 2.37 meters.
None managed to reach the current world record of 2.39 meters. Instead, they made history by jumping the same number of meters. However, they are not the first to do so. Gianmarco Tamberi and Mutaz Essa Barshim maintain an off-track friendship.
According to the BBC, the first Olympic podium divided in athletics took place in 1912. Since then, there are 109 that this feat was not fulfilled.
