Is it old-fashioned that by law Amalia has to give up the throne if she ever wants to marry a woman? | Join the conversation

On December 7, Amalia will turn eighteen. Peter Rehwinkel writes in his book about the changes that our princess will experience after she turns eighteen. In his book he also states that in 2000 the government indicated that if the heir to the throne wants to marry someone of the same sex, the rights to the throne will lapse. The reason is that no children can be born from a same-sex marriage and there is thus no hereditary heir to the throne.

Gay marriage

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the first gay marriage in the Netherlands. According to Statistics Netherlands, there were 20,000 same-sex marriages in the Netherlands at the beginning of 2021. More than 19 thousand men and 21 thousand women have said yes to someone of the same sex. The Netherlands was the first country to practice same-sex marriage.

For Princess Amalia, however, a same-sex marriage is still not possible, if she so desires and if she wants to become Queen. It doesn’t mean she shouldn’t be attracted to women. She just can’t marry it.

William tweeted that love is unpredictable and that he would be just as proud of a lesbian queen as he would be of a straight queen.

Another Twitter user says that it seems that everyone in the Netherlands is equal, but not in this case.

Twitterer Marco finds it bizarre that Amalia loses everything if she wants to marry a woman.

What do you think? Is it old-fashioned that Amalia has to give up the throne if she marries a woman? Lesbian couples can have children too, so is this really necessary? Or do you think it is understandable? And do you understand that they are afraid that there will be no hereditary heir to the throne? Join the conversation through our Facebook page!
