Call it effective or tasteless, but almost everyone flirts while showering sometimes. You’re already at a drain and you don’t have to flush the toilet. But is it harmful to pee standing up?
As long as you hide the flow
Urotherapist at the UMC Utrecht Anka Nieuwhof-Leppink puts it simply: it doesn’t matter if you urinate while sitting or standing. “The important thing is that you peek in a relaxed way. If you stress or tighten your pelvic floor muscles too hard, you run the risk of not emptying your bladder completely. And that can cause problems.’
This applies to both men and women, although you might think that the former have less of a problem with it. ‘Nonetheless, healthcare professionals always advise urinating while sitting, to relax better.’
But pee is dirty, right?
But isn’t it dirty just letting your urine run over your toes? ‘Well, what’s dirty? Urine is particularly ‘dirty’ if it stays in your bladder for too long. For example, if you do not urinate properly. Bacteria can then start to grow, which increases the risk of bladder infection.’
Good advice
Squat is the best position to go to the toilet, especially for a big mess. So you want to ‘go’ while showering, but can’t relax your muscles while standing? Then squat down to urinate thoroughly. But save the big job for the toilet…
And what about that story you have to watch automatically as soon as you hear water running? That is a myth, says Nieuwhof-Leppink. But you can teach yourself. If you pee every time you shower, you are teaching yourself that you need to pee when you shower. This is not due to the water that flows, but because of the situation. ‘Just as you must often, as soon as you enter your house.’ But that doesn’t hurt at all.
