Is it dangerous to run the AC inside the car? Things to watch out for

The cause of death of actor Vinod Thomas, who was found dead in his car, has been confirmed to be due to inhalation of poisonous gas. Not for the first time. A death like this happens. Before this, many people have died after inhaling this poisonous gas. AC in scorching weather It is unthinkable to travel in a car without it on. Whether it’s summer or rainy season, AC in vehicles. It is indispensable. There are many people who stop the car on the side of the road for a while on a long distance journey and turn on the AC to relax. Watch out for those. Because this is a way of inviting danger.

Although rare, what is the cause of such deaths??

A car’s engine is run by burning petrol/diesel. After complete combustion, carbon dioxide and steam are produced. But when incomplete combustion takes place, i.e. in the absence of sufficient oxygen for combustion, small amounts of carbon monoxide are also likely to be present. When the fuel is burned in this way, there is a high probability that carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas of about 30,000 parts per million, will be produced.

It is converted into non-toxic carbon dioxide by a system called ‘catalytic converter’ attached to the exhaust pipe. It usually doesn’t cause any problems in cars. However, if there are holes in the pipe due to rust or decay due to other reasons, the poisonous gas called carbon monoxide can come out before reaching the ‘catalytic converter’. Otherwise, the catalytic converter may not be working properly. If this smoke gets inside for any reason, it is dangerous.

If this condition is present in a moving vehicle, a good portion of it will be dissipated by the air flow from the outside. But it can enter through holes in a stopped vehicle. Breathing it for a long time can cause death. Many people who sleep in AC may not be aware of the presence of carbon monoxide. If this ‘smoke’ is inhaled for a long time, it causes the oxygen level in the blood to decrease.. which becomes the cause of death.

Even if the air condition is on, the amount of carbon monoxide inside the car increases as the ventilation does not work properly. Normally, the oxygen in the air we breathe combines with the hemoglobin in the blood and reaches different parts of the body with it. But when carbon monoxide enters the body along with oxygen, hemoglobin prefers to join with carbon monoxide. Thus, without getting the necessary breathing air, the cells will die. It only takes a few minutes for carbon monoxide to kill the body. Shortness of breath, dizziness, fatigue and slowness are all dangerous symptoms.

How to defend??

* Do not start the AC as soon as you get into the car to travel. Because Benzyme, a poisonous gas emitted from the car’s dashboard, seats and air fresheners, can cause health problems. Special attention should be paid to this during hot season.

As soon as a person running the AC gets inside a parked car during hot weather, they have to inhale high levels of this toxic gas. Binzyme levels can rise to 2000 to 4000 mg inside a car parked in a hot location.

The accepted safe level of benzyme in a typical closed room or car is 50 mg/sq.ft.

Inhalation of benzyme gas can poison the bones and cause a decrease in white blood cells and anemia. Benzyme gas is toxic to the liver and kidneys.

* Before turning on the AC, make sure to lower the windows and let fresh air in and run the AC only.

* When turning on the vehicle that has been in the sun for a long time, lower all the window glasses and run the fan at maximum speed. This will help to expel the hot air easily. Only then roll up the glasses and run the AC.

*Put the ventilation mode of the AC only in dust-free and clean air conditions.

* If the AC seems to be running low, get it checked by an AC mechanic and troubleshoot.

*Carrying children is another major hazard. If you have to take children inside a closed car, raise the window at least 3-4 cm. This is also dangerous if it is a power window. It is very likely that the child’s hand and other things will get stuck between the window.

* Even if you are at home, keep the windows of the parked car closed. This will help prevent children from accidentally getting trapped inside the car.

*Do not leave pets locked inside a parked car. If you are trapped inside the car and have trouble breathing, try to get out as soon as possible.

*Move to a place with fresh air. If the person is unconscious, get them to the hospital as soon as possible and try to give them oxygen.
