UFC President Dana White supports Islam Makhachev’s possible move to welterweight.
Islam Makhachev has not stepped foot inside the Octagon since his title defense in June against Dustin Poirier. During the main event At UFC 302, although Poirier put up some resistance, Makhachev ultimately won the fight via fifth-round submission.
After the fight, Islam Makhachev discussed his plans to move up in weight welter. However, that plan was put on hold after teammate Belal Muhammad defeated Leon Edwards in July. Dana White discusses the potential rise of Islam Makhachev
During a press conference for the event Power Slap on Thursday, October 24, Dana White was asked about the possibility of seeing Islam Makhachev fight in the under 77 kg category. His response, “ Yes, absolutely“, seems to indicate that the UFC president, who sometimes resists the ambitions of other champions, appreciates the idea for Makhachev.
Although White doesn’t consider him the best fighter pound-for-poundhe is ready to offer him the opportunity to become a double champion.
First and foremost, the lightweight champion will first have to face Arman Tsarukyan again. According to multiple sources, their clash is scheduled for UFC 311 in January, but that should of course be taken with a grain of salt. Khabib Nurmagomedov revealed that Makhachev has already signed a contract to return to the Octagon, although the fight has not yet been officially announced.
