Is genetic testing necessary before marriage? Here’s what a genomics expert says: Okezone salute

A LOT preparations are made by the future husband and wife before the wedding but unfortunately preparations in terms of health are often overlooked.

Although the medical examination test or premarital checkup before marriage is one of the most important wedding preparations to do.

As revealed by researcher and molecular genomics expert, Drh. Safarina G. Malik, the purpose of this genetic test is to check for red blood cell disorders (thalassemia) in potential partners to examine the potential for other infectious diseases that may be inherited.

Unfortunately, exams like this are not yet common among Indonesians.

“It is necessary (genetic testing), indeed if specific for thalassemia, premarital screening is recommended, so then you can find out if you have thalassemia,” said Drh. Safarina when he recently met in Jakarta.

“Because if a career (disease carrier) meets a career, after that it can be thalassemia major. Even if the status is different, it can appear (inferior), but it is not uncommon in Indonesia to check it,” he continued.

The premarital screening test serves as a preventative effort for the people of Indonesia in the long run because it prevents health problems for themselves, their partners and future generations of offspring (children).

Bearing in mind that in reality a person who looks healthy from the outside may actually have the characteristics of being a carrier of disease, which can be dangerous for their offspring.

In addition to premarital checkups, husband and wife ideally also conduct prenatal screenings, tests done during pregnancy or during pregnancy, to determine if the baby tends to have certain birth defects or abnormalities.

“Abroad it is common to have premarital and prenatal screening for those who already have children and want to have more. The child is screened in this way, so it is a prevention effort,” concluded Drh. Safarina.

For your information, thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder and is caused by a hemoglobin disorder due to the inability of the bone marrow to form the protein needed to produce hemoglobin. So that it may cause damage to red blood cells and make patients suffer from anemia or lack of blood.
