Is Geert Wilders’ victory in the Netherlands a harbinger of the elections in Belgium next year?

How does Tom Van Grieken, party chairman of Vlaams Belang, see the future?

According to Van Grieken, the Netherlands has put an end to “the extremist policy of the political elite”, something he also hopes to achieve in Flanders in June 2024. In fact, “We hope to beat him.”

He says he admires the path that Wilders has taken. “He has said that the PVV is an outspoken anti-Islamization party, but also that compromises have to be made and that there are other challenges.”

The party chairman realizes that, if the cordon sanitary is broken, Vlaams Belang will also have to compromise. “That is a consequence if you get an executive mandate. You then represent not only your voters, but the entire country. The ideal should not get in the way of the good. You can ask me about my ideals, but if I already do the good can achieve – strong social security and limiting migration – then I am already a happy chairman.”

To achieve this, his party must convince government partners. “I hope that N-VA will join forces with us if voters make us the largest party, but then they have to put on their bones and roll up their sleeves,” he says. “I want to be a full partner.”
