LIVE Techno – Sun moving across the sky, making us never guess that its relationship to Earth changes over time. In fact, the average distance between Earth and sun not static from year to year.
So do we know if the Earth is getting closer or farther from the Sun? The sun is getting farther away from Earth over time. On average, Earth is about 93 million miles (150 million kilometers) from the Sun, according to the Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
However the orbit is not perfectly circular, it is slightly elliptical or oval in shape. This means that Earth’s distance from the Sun can range from about 91.4 million to 94.5 million miles (147.1 million to 152.1 million km).
However, the average stretch between the Earth and the Sun slowly increases over time. This increasing distance has two main causes. One is that the Sun loses mass and engages the same force, causing tides on Earth.
The sun is shrinking
The nuclear fusion reactions that power the Sun have converted mass into energy. Because it is constantly generating energy, the star is also constantly losing mass.
Over the remainder of its lifetime, which is estimated to be about 5 billion years away, it will evolve over time in which the Sun is predicted to lose about 0.1 percent of its total mass before starting to die, according to astronomer Brian DiGiorgio.
