On January 18, the head of the General Operations Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Sergey Rudskoi, stated that the Russian Ministry of Defense had received information about the movement of IS fighters in the Palmyra region, with the aim of destroying historical cultural heritage in the city.
IS gangs attacked Palmyra (240 km from Damascus) on December 9 last year. The militants tried to seize oil wells and the military airport in the vicinity of the city. On December 11, the Syrian government army retreated in the fighting for the central part of Palmyra.
Palmyra was liberated by the Syrian army on March 27, 2016 with the assistance of the Russian Air Force. Then the Russian sappers took part in the demining of the city and its architectural monuments.
