As the start of the NFL regular season draws closer, tension in the Dallas Cowboys locker room is intensifying. A week ago, team owner Jerry Jones publicly expressed that they were missing their star receiver, CeeDee Lamb, amid a contract strike that has stretched throughout the summer. With each passing day, the pressure is mounting for the Cowboys to reach a contract extension with Lamb, who stands to lose millions if he doesn’t sign.
Lamb, who is set to make roughly $18 million in 2024, will become one of the most coveted free agents if he doesn’t reach an agreement with the Cowboys before the season ends. However, uncertainty about his future in Dallas has increased, and Lamb himself has contributed to that.
On Monday, Lamb posted an image on Instagram of Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man in his silver and black suit, sparking immediate speculation. Some interpreted the image as a sign that Lamb is taking a more defiant stance in the stalled negotiations. The choice of black suit even led some social media users to suggest it could be a nod to the Las Vegas Raiders, hinting at a possible interest in the team if talks with the Cowboys fall through.
Lamb, who watched elite receivers like AJ Brown, Tyreek Hill and Justin Jefferson sign lucrative contracts this offseason, has expressed frustration with the Cowboys’ apparent lack of urgency in offering him a contract worthy of his talents. In 2023, Lamb recorded 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns, his best year to date, but has still failed to secure an extension.
The exact meaning of the Spider-Man image remains a mystery, but one thing seems clear: this saga is still far from over. With the start of the season just around the corner, the clash between Lamb and Jerry Jones threatens to destabilise the Cowboys’ aspirations to reach the Super Bowl.
