While Blizzard’s current player focus is mostly on their acquisition and success of Diablo, it’s clear that their repertoire is wider – much wider. After all, one of the proofs is the shot of the StarCraft series. The younger brother of Warcraft, which preferred to take on a futuristic theme rather than pursue pure fantasy, was first released in 1998 and has only grown since then. Through the continuation of StarCraft 2 in 2010, it started a several-year epoch of its additions, and through the remaster of the first one, it returned to its roots in 2017. Now there is talk of the fact that it may not have been the last act. At least that much now says Jez Corden, the editor of the Windows Central website, who more than hints at the creation of the third part.
Journalist Jez Corden confirmed (in a now-deleted tweet) that Blizzard is working on the series StarCraftAccording to his information, he is developing the third part
In response to a question from a player who asked a reporter if Microsoft would revive StarCraft if it completed its purchase of Blizzard now, Corden said (in a now-deleted message) that it wouldn’t even be necessary.
„[Microsoft] won’t have to revive StarCraft,” with the possible implication that the series is already being revived in this way.
So another user, wanting to know more, directly asked if it was StarCraft 3 and if Corden knew anything about it. He then only gave a one-word affirmative answer to both questions: “Yeah,” reviving hopes that the series could continue years later – though apparently for a long time.
As we already mentioned, the second part was released a long time ago. In its initial human campaign – Wings of Liberty – it was released 13 years ago, in 2010. However, the game also saw two expansions that explored other races. The first was Heart of the Swarm, which focused on the Zerg with an iconic trailer in 2013, and the second was Legacy of the Void – a Protoss chapter that came out in 2015 and closed the story overall.
So, as you can see, the story arc of the duo ended 8 years ago, without much indication that it should continue. Meanwhile, Diablo and Overwatch continued to grow, probably thanks to the more popular genre. After all, over time both of these hegemons got their very fresh sequels (in the case of Overwatch even the first part), and it makes sense that if Blizzard is going to release other similar games, they have to choose between two options – either they will take risks again and bet like in Overwatch to a new brand, or will it continue the already established one and bet on nostalgia as in the case of Diablo.
If we consider the second option, it makes sense to choose both StaCraft and Warcraft.
