Obstetrician and sexologist Boyke Dian Nugraha said that black nipples are normal.

Nipples and areola on the breast can be pink, dark red, to black-brown. This color corresponds to the skin color of the person.

For the record, the nipple is a small bulge that is located in the middle of the breast. While the areola is the circular area that surrounds the nipple.

Boyke explained, nipple color can change for several reasons.

“Black due to hyperpigmentation due to increased hormones during pregnancy,” he explained.

Hyperpigmentation is a condition of darkening of the skin in certain areas. It occurs due to excessive production of melanin or a pigment that gives color to the skin and hair.

Apart from pregnancy, Boyke also said that the color of the nipples could change due to cancer or a nipple infection. These changes are certainly followed by the appearance of symptoms of these diseases.

“Due to pregnancy hormones, the nipples become black and grow so that ASI (breast milk) is easier for the baby to suck,” she explained.

According to Boyke, the color of the nipple does not really affect the baby. Even so, these changes could make it easier for the baby to find the nipple.

Boyke emphasized that women do not need to carry out a treatment procedure to change the color of their nipples to pink. This is especially true for women who are pregnant, have a baby, or are still breastfeeding.

This action is usually carried out at the request of the husband or for women who feel inferior because of the color of their black nipples.

“No need. The baby’s needs are more important,” said Boyke.

Nipple change procedures are not needed because the black color is a normal condition for every woman.
