Why Apple canceled AirPower
The charging mat was reportedly prone to overheating when charging multiple devices simultaneously. In particular, the key feature of AirPower was its ability to charge multiple devices at once. Other reports pointed to coil-related interference issues that affected charging efficiency.
“After much effort, we concluded that AirPower will not meet our high standards and canceled the project,” said Dan Riccio, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, two years ago. “We apologize to customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and we are committed to driving the wireless experience. “
Is Apple’s charging mat making a comeback?
Interestingly, there are rumors that the AirPower could see the light of day. Nothing is certain, but Bloomberg recently said that Apple is working on a new wireless charging product similar in nature to AirPower.
The Cupertino company is still exploring a future wireless charger that works similarly to its failed AirPower, a charging mat designed to simultaneously power an iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods, the people said. It is also internally researching alternative wireless charging methods that can work at greater distances than an inductive connection.
In addition, Apple has several patent applications on this type of technology. Some were made in 2019 and 2020 after the product was canceled. However, it is possible that the technology described in the patents will be incorporated into something like MagSafe. Still, Bloomberg’s track record regarding the Apple rumors is pretty solid.
However, Bloomberg notes that it may be several years before Apple’s continued work with wireless charging produces a new charging pad similar to AirPower. In short, it is unclear if AirPower will see the light of day. Still, there is reason to believe that Apple’s engineers have not yet abandoned the idea. Meanwhile, there are already attractive cargo mats on the market from companies like Mophie. It is possible that by the time AirPower is ready, it will be much less attractive to the masses.
