Like his NHL career, Alexis Lafrenière struggled during New York Rangers training camp. In three pre-season games, the striker has failed to score a single point, and his place in the team is now in question.
Having had the opportunity to obtain the position of right winger on the first line, Lafrenière seems to be withering like a plant deprived of sunlight.
As Larry Brooks of the New York Post reports:
It’s not that No. 13 — who turns 22 the day before the Oct. 12 opener at Buffalo — hasn’t looked like a top pick poised for a breakout season, it’s Lafrenière mostly looked like an undrafted player invited to training camp for a tryout.
Matt Rempe – a 2020 sixth-round pick – made a more positive impression before being sent to Hartford last weekend.

Ouch !
Lafrenière nevertheless has the tools necessary to produce in the NHL. Is he unhappy in New York? Is the weight that comes with the top pick label starting to be too much for him?
The Rangers have been patient with him and could continue to be, but if 4th line players really bring more to the team than him, one wonders how much longer that will last.
