The British, in turn, threaten to block the export of certain raw materials needed to produce the corona vaccines. But in the long run, these measures do not benefit anyone. “In this era of vaccine production, people depend on the smoothest possible import and export of all kinds of different things,” said Hoon. “The (countries of the) EU also do not have the right to confiscate the blocked vaccines. They will then be blocked, but nothing will happen with them. These kinds of measures, export restrictions, harm all parties in the long term.”
Jacob Kirkegaard of think tank the German Marshall Fund even warns against a real trade war. “The European Commission must prevent that a contract dispute between AstraZeneca and the EU – which is actually what it is about – does not turn into a trade war,” he said yesterday in “To the point” to one.
