Many people think of blood clots as hard lumps that form inside the veins of the pelvic legs, however, sometimes the clots can travel under the skin, giving the appearance of a rash which can appear in several points.
In one strange case of a British man, blood clots caused a rash that seemed to move from one part of his body to another, according to the British newspaper Express.
When a blood clot forms, it can disrupt normal blood flow, causing pressure to build up within the vein. Although it often stays still, part of the clot can break off, enter the bloodstream, and travel to the lungs.
Sometimes the clotting occurs in the veins under the skin’s surface, a condition known as superficial thrombophlebitis. The condition can also be described as outpatient, meaning that the clot returns to a different part of the body.
WebMD explains, “The clot often travels from one leg to the other, as superficial thrombophlebitis causes a vein near the surface of the skin to become inflamed, which causes visible symptoms.”
In the case report of the British man, doctors describe venous thrombosis occurring under the skin surface of the forearm. This was the case for a 62-year-old man who went to hospital with abdominal pain, loss of appetite, jaundice and dark urine.
The report stated: “The patient described a rash in multiple areas during the previous weeks and the paramedics indicated that these findings were consistent with migratory thrombophlebitis.”
Doctors noted a “small rash” on the patient’s right forearm and left “lower limb”, which was noticed two months after the patient was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
The report notes that the diagnosis was facilitated by the discovery that the man had previously had pancreatic cancer.
This is because pancreatic cancer is known to make blood clot more easily and in many cases is the first sign of cancer.
These thrombotic events are generally considered a disease of the lower extremities, but as the case study demonstrates, they can occur in many parts of the body.
“It can often affect the breasts, chest wall, penis or upper extremities,” explained the British Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.
Symptoms include swelling and redness along part of the veins and a possible high temperature.
When the inflammation has subsided, you may see a dark area of skin over the affected vein, and you may also feel a small, hard lump under the skin, which is tender to the touch.
Due to the unknown symptoms of blood clots, doctors advise other doctors to check for any underlying malignancies in patients with skin rashes.
“Any patient presenting with a migratory rash without an underlying diagnosis of exclusive malignancy should be examined,” said the case study authors.
