Are we in for another health crisis?
There is no way an epidemic of West Nile fever will break out in the country, reassured BNT Iva Hristova – director of the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases.
She explained that the infection is transmitted by a certain type of mosquito, which is the most common in our country.
“There is no room for panic – this is not a disease that is transmitted from person to person, there is no way it will become an epidemic. In addition, every year there are cases in Europe, there are only a few in Bulgaria, and there are years when there are no such cases. The most there were many in 2018-15,” explained Prof. Hristova.
Of the three registered patients in our country, only one traveled to Greece. There, in reality, the problem is much bigger, said the director of the NCZPB.
“They have already had epidemic outbreaks several times and currently report about half of the total number of cases for Europe,” said Prof. Hristova.
Complications are less than 1% of those infected and they are among the risk group – people over 65-70 years old, who very often have accompanying diseases in which the immune system is suppressed.
She predicts that most people will get through it without symptoms or with a flu-like illness.
