Undeclared incomes in Greece and abroad, “hidden” real estate sales, taxpayers who appear with incomes that do not exceed 10,000 euros, but also those who obtain income from short-term rentals Airbnb are being hunted by the tax control mechanism with the aim of collecting at least 1.7 billion euros from tax evasion until the end of the year.
AADE, escalating the battle against tax evasion, “runs” intersections in more than 120,000 VAT registrations and prepares at least 20,000 “ravasaki” with “estimated” taxes, i.e. with tax amounts that have been calculated for income which is obtained based on the data and information available to the tax authority.
Pensioners and employees with undeclared retroactive amounts of pensions and wages, taxpayers with income from abroad, property owners with undeclared income from short-term property leases and freelancers pass through the scanner of the tax auditors.
Two strike teams
To carry out the checks and crossings, two new strike groups are established:
- The center of special forces of tax and customs audits and investigations. This purpose-built structure will serve as a central coordination hub, enhancing cooperation and efficiency among specialized control forces by providing targeted real-time intervention in the field.
- The dedicated mass digital intersection unit that will feature innovative tools such as big data analysis, benchmarking, online surveys and digital invoicing audits.
According to the Operational Plan for 2024, which was published in the Government Gazette, AADE, in addition to the POS-Cashier interface, is deploying this year the digital consignment note, the pilot application of the digital customer list, the new asset control information system (BANCAPP) , the obligation of myDATA, CONTROLlive, the input-output data utilization system and the signal receiving center information system, which will be used by the Chamber of Commerce. The plan also foresees the creation of a Registry of Property Ownership and Management and the interconnection of the AADE real estate database with the Land Registry.
Intersections
On the intersection front, the following actions stand out:
- Identification of undeclared real estate sales in 2018
- Compliance control of the intended property registration number (AMA) on the basis of the AADE cooperation protocol with short-term rental platforms for 2023.
- Identification of undeclared income from short-term rentals of natural persons without business activity related to tourist accommodation, in the context of the tax years 2020-2021.
- Development and implementation of statistical methodology and analytical methods to detect suspicious transactions
- Information provision actions by foreign payment service institutions for transactions of Greek residents.
- Reconciliation of hotels’ reported gross revenue with revenue data from their transactions with the Booking platform for tax year 2022
- Utilization of myDATA data for zero VAT returns for the year 2022.
