Ironman announced changes for Hawaii qualifying this year. The race organizer is reacting to the numerous postponements in the Ironman calendar due to the corona pandemic. The date of the World Cup will not be shaken: it should take place as planned on October 10, 2020 in Kailua-Kona.
Qualification possible until August 30th
The time window for slot allocation in 2020 will now remain open one week longer than originally planned and will not close until August 30th. As a result, three additional races – Vichy (France), Astana (Kazakhstan) and Penticton (Canada) – are slipped into this year’s qualifying round. At each of these events, 60 starting places for the 2020 World Cup will be awarded, Ironman announced on Thursday. In addition, the events continue to count towards the 2021 qualification.
Ironman races that have already been postponed will remain in the qualifying season for the 2020 World Cup, provided they are held before or on August 30th. All subsequent events will be included in the qualification for the 2021 World Cup.
Legacy athletes are advancing
In addition to the slot allocation, the legacy program for 2020 was adjusted. Every legacy athlete on the waiting list should now get a starting place for this year.
