The 120mm Iron Sting mortar was developed by the ministry in conjunction with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Elbit Systems. After completing trials in the south of the country, the weapons will be delivered to the army.
Defense Minister Benny Gantz said in a statement that Israeli industry was providing the IDF with technology “that changes the arena of battle and provides us with a more lethal, accurate and effective way.”
Referring to Israeli clashes with the Hamas group in the Gaza Strip and the Lebanese Hezbollah group in the north, Gantz said the weapon fulfilled the army’s need for “a suitable tool for fighting enemies hiding among the civilian population, while adhering to the legal standards and values set by the State of Israel. . “
He said Iron Sting would integrate well with the IDF’s multi-year plan, the general framework in which the IDF builds up its arsenal and trains its troops to deal with the threats it expects to face in the coming years.
