Iron Maiden in Germany: huge concerts, but without the legendary jumbo jet

Köln – Iron Maiden in Cologne! On Saturday, the mega band starts their German music summer with a concert in the RheinEnergiestadion with a total of four performances. The shows are part of the “Legacy Of The Beast Tour”.

Iron Maiden’s performance on July 2, 2022 in Cologne has already been postponed twice before! Corona caused the double delay.
Now the metal musicians around co-founder and bassist Steve Harris (66) are definitely coming.
Cologne will be followed two days later in Berlin (July 4th) by a gig at the Waldbühne. After that there are still two performances in Stuttgart (July 9th) and Bremen (July 20th).

For Iron Maiden, the German concerts are further appearances of a huge tour. The musicians have visited more than 39 countries all over the world as part of the “Legacy Of The Beast Tour” and seen two million fans.
However, Iron Maiden no longer travels from country to country and from city to city on its own Boeing 747.
Singer Bruce Dickinson (63) had a pilot’s license and the band actually had their own band jumbo jet with the “Ed Force One”.
But the famous plane was retired! An accident in Chile in 2016 damaged two engines and other parts of the aircraft. Two people on the airfield were also injured in the incident and, according to information at the time, even had to be hospitalized.

This was followed by the decommissioning of the plane. Dickinson, himself a pilot and aerospace entrepreneur, justified the decision: “Because it was damaged, because of the environment and also because it’s impractical to always have an airplane on your back.”
The parking fees and the practical everyday life for the big plane may also have played a role: “You don’t need a jumbo to fly from Paris to Zurich.”
By the way, before the 747, the band had a Boeing 757 in service. Over time, however, it actually became too small for musicians!

Dickinson then came up with the idea of the 747 and acquired the necessary flight type rating for the giant aircraft.

If you want to see the band live, you can still buy tickets! In Cologne, Airbourne and Lord of the Lost are supporting acts on the stage.
