Those interested in the great wars of the last century may know the term Iron Harvest. It is the metal by-catch that farmers remove from their fields after plowing. In some areas, old stuff is still emerging, especially metal remains from the First World War. In this area, it is mainly the fields in Flanders and northern France, but there is still enough in the ground in other parts of Europe. The term doesn’t even directly apply to the game of the same name, but it does indicate the atmosphere in Iron Harvest 1920+.

Is responsible for that atmosphere Jakub Różalski, a Polish illustrator. Różalski likes to be inspired by the somewhat desolate atmosphere of just after the First World War. He has made a whole series of illustrations of that period, but of an alternative reality. Because although clothes and buildings fit in with the era, the world that Różalski paints also contains the necessary fantasy vehicles. The soldiers, who are clearly present everywhere, suddenly appear to have ample access to various types of mechs just after WWI. The overarching universe was designated 1920+ by Różalski.

Three factions

Różalski’s drawings caught the attention of King Art Games, a small German studio in Bremen. He saw the basis for a game, an RTS game, that is. It takes place in Eastern Europe from just after the First World War. As in Różalski’s drawings, however, it is a fantasy world, although there are clearly parallels with reality. For example, there are three factions in the game that are at war with each other. From the west the Saxony Empire advances, from the east the Rusviet come and they meet in the territory of the Polania Republic. It is not difficult to guess which powers have modeled.
