UFC mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor will be checked for incitement of hatred after his critical statements against migrants, writes The Sunday Times.
The police investigation was prompted by McGregor’s posts following the attack on November 23, when a man armed with a knife attacked a teacher and three children in Parnell Square in central Dublin. The fighter called for controls on foreigners entering Ireland and also supported the protesters, the newspaper writes. McGregor is suspected of inciting hatred; under this article, the athlete could face up to two years in prison.
Riots engulfed the Irish capital following the attack on the evening of November 23. The suspect was detained at the scene, his motive remains unknown. According to the latest reports, the five-year-old girl is in critical condition, the woman’s injuries are assessed as serious. Two of the injured children received minor injuries.
Initially, the police did not disclose the nationality of the suspect, but information appeared online that the attacker was a native of Algeria. Commissioner Harris said the protesters were “a group of crazed hooligans driven by far-right ideology.”
Justice Minister Helen McEntee said the government was preparing legislation on facial recognition technology to help find offenders, RTE reported. The technology will be used by the police to identify, in particular, those involved in riots.
