Irish minister charges Van Morrison with defamation

Irish Health Minister Robin Swann is suing singer Van Morrison for defamation, Irish newspaper reports The Sunday Life. The 76-year-old artist called the minister “very dangerous” and “a scammer” because of the way he is handling the corona pandemic.

The singer made his statements about Swann, among other things, during a dinner in a chic hotel in Belfast in June. He was angry that a concert of his had been canceled due to the corona measures. Van Morrison also called the minister a scammer in an interview.

Van Morrison is known as an outspoken critic of the corona measures taken by the Irish government. The singer has already made three songs about the pandemic in the past year, in which he stated that the Irish government is taking away citizens’ freedoms. According to Swann, the songs are dangerous because Van Morrison does not substantiate his claims scientifically.

The first hearing of the case is not expected until early 2022.
