The Irish Defence Forces are sending a team of personnel to Sudan to evacuate Irish citizens caught up in the country’s ongoing conflict. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar hosted a Cabinet meeting to discuss the proposal, which was subsequently approved, and up to 12 members of the Defence Forces are expected to go to Sudan soon. More than 140 Irish citizens are thought to be seeking assistance, with the Department of Foreign Affairs in contact with each of them. French and US diplomatic personnel have already been evacuated from the area. The Irish embassy in Kenya is urging Irish citizens to register for assistance.
