Irish court finds Subway sandwich not bread

The sandwiches used by the American fast food chain Subway should not be regarded as bread. That is what the Supreme Court in Ireland has ruled, writes the BBC. According to the court, they contain too much sugar.

The ruling was related to the tax levied on the sandwiches. According to an Irish subsidiary of Subway, no VAT is payable because it is a basic foodstuff.

But the court does not agree, because the sandwiches contain too much sugar. Irish law states that dough may contain a maximum of 2 percent sugar and fat. Subway sandwiches contain 10 percent sugar. Therefore, a VAT rate of 13.5 percent applies.
