IRIS: Trading soared in the last eight months – 2024-08-21 05:57:36

The transactions carried out daily through the national IRIS payment system are growing at a rapid pace, as by the first week of August the service had been activated by 366,000 professionals and 2.9 million individuals.

It is recalled that the Minister of National Economy and Finance Kostis Hatzidakis has given professionals a deadline of September 2 to register in the new system.

The success and record of IRIS is illustrated by two impressive figures.

The first that in July of this year there were 5.3 million transactions worth €611 million, when in July 2021 transactions had reached 273,000. That is to say, within three years they essentially increased 20 times and the second that through the same application, in July 2024, 12 times more transactions between professionals were carried out compared to the corresponding month (61,000 against 4,500).

In the last eight months through the IRIS Person to Person service, more than 26 million transactions took place compared to 9.9 million in the same period in 2023, 2.6 million in 2022 and 942,748 in 2021.

Regarding IRIS Person to Business and payments to a sole proprietorship or freelancer instead of cash or card, from the beginning of the year to mid-August there were 272,984 transactions compared to 25,778 last year, 10,330 in 2022 and just 5,521 in 2021.

Finally, IRIS Commerce, which refers to payment in an online store, in 2024 showed 3.88 million transactions against 2.043 million in 2023, 1.3 million in 2022 and approximately 800,000 in 2021.

E-commerce

Transaction value reached €1.34 billion in the eight months of 2024 for P2P, compared to €441 million in 2023, around €116 million in 2022 and €51.6 million in 2021, while the corresponding amounts for the P2B amounted to 20.6 million euros this year, 2.043 million euros in 2023, 880,633 euros in 2022 and 482,747 euros in 2021.

Finally, in e-commerce transactions of 1.9 billion euros were made in 2024, 1.036 billion euros in 2023, 490 million euros in 2022 and 132 million euros in 2021.

It is noted that on September 2nd, the deadline for the mandatory connection of professional accounts to the system, professionals who have not connected will be faced with fines of up to 1,500 euros.

Finally, the limit of 500 euros per day for transactions through IRIS is applied per customer and not to the total amount of payments that the professional can receive during the 24-hour period. For example, a professional can receive in one day 4 payments of 500 euros each (a total of 2,000 euros).
