TEHERAN, KOMPAS.TVThe Iranian military has reportedly sent warships to the Red Sea as militarization of the waters increases. Iranian media reported that the ship sent was the IRIS Alborz, part of Iran’s 94th Navy Fleet.

The IRIS Alborz ship is known to have been built before the 1979 Iranian Islamic Revolution. However, this ship was overhauled and fitted with a new weapons system four years ago.

Iran took this step after the United States (US) sank three Yemeni Houthi rebel ships and killed 10 militiamen on Sunday (31/12/2023). US helicopters launched the attack after receiving an SOS call from a Singapore-flagged container ship that was attacked by the Houthis.

The Houthis condemned the US attack and vowed to retaliate. The Houthis themselves have repeatedly attacked ships passing through the Red Sea, accusing them of being linked to Israel.

Al Jazeera reported that the disembarkation of the Iranian warship also coincided with a meeting between the Head of Iran’s National Security Council, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, and the Houthi negotiator, Muhammad Abdulsalam.

It is not yet known where the meeting took place or what issue was the topic of discussion. However, Iranian media reported that Tehran applauded the Houthis’ move to support Palestine by declaring war on Israel.
