Roma – «I wouldn’t dream of criticizing the civic choices of Elly Schlein, having been a civic candidate myself in the past. But I think that a mix of skills is needed in the Dem lists. The Democratic Party “flies” if it has a balanced team.” Irene Tinagli, is the dem president of the Strasbourg Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs. You are an economist, you should be reconfirmed as a candidate in the North West.
Tinagli, there is a lot of discontent in the Democratic Party regarding the lists for the European elections. Do you also think that this is not good?
«I think that bad moods are not an anomaly. There are inevitable internal discussions. But above all, secretary Schlein arrived a year ago and it is clear that she wants to introduce elements of innovation. The question, however, is finding a balance. I came to politics as a civic citizen. I wouldn’t dream of criticizing civic candidacies. I believe that the party can benefit from additions on key issues. But the overall project needs to be clear.”
What should the project be?
«You see, the team is more important than individual names, sometimes even famous ones. But most of all, skills are decisive. Skills, I add, consistent with the battles, objectives and dossiers on which Europe will have to work. And the challenges awaiting the next European legislature are decisive.”
Would you like a mix in the Dem lists?
«I’ll make a premise. The legislature that we left behind had to face epochal crises one after the other: from the economic one caused by the lockdown due to the Covid epidemic to the energy crisis linked to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia to the inflation that eroded purchasing power, ultimately leading to destabilization in the Middle East. We have worked on concrete responses: the Recovery Fund, the Sure fund to protect workers, the Repower Eu for the energy crisis. The review of state aid to help families and businesses pay their bills.”
A furrow on which to sow in spite of the sovereignists?
“Exact. The contradictions of nationalists, sovereignists and conservatives will emerge. The next legislature will aim to make emergency measures structural. We have shined a light on the Union’s shortcomings. For example, on the inadequate European budget to deal with crises, on industrial and energy policies, on the battles for fair taxes as we have done with the introduction of the global minimum tax on multinationals. We need to proceed with the reform of the Treaties. This is the game and you can’t improvise: you have to be equipped.”
His, as president of the economic commission, was a privileged observatory.
“It’s true and also an extraordinary political training ground, of which I have felt burdens and honours.”
So the Democratic Party cannot distract itself: skills and more skills?
«This is what he has already done in this legislature with Paolo Gentiloni, first with Enzo Amendola, Roberto Gualtieri, David Sassoli. We dems have played a key role and we will have to continue to have it.”
Now the incumbents, particularly women, could be penalized based on the preference mechanism if Schlein runs.
«Yes, in fact there is a risk, and I imagine that the first female secretary of the party will want to reflect carefully on this point. In the eyes of the voters, however, it will be very important to understand which team to play. I repeat: the news is correct, but with clear dossiers and the need for skills. Obviously the secretary will decide how to do it and with whom.”
Should the secretary apply?
«It would be a novelty in our history with aspects that could be positive, as long as the PD project, the program and the team are the driving force. The polarization of the Schlein/Meloni clash risks focusing the electoral campaign on national dynamics when instead European issues are fundamental.”
