On July 30, the State Border Guard in Augšdaugava region detained 13 foreigners and two displaced persons for illegal crossing of the Latvian-Belarusian border, the State Border Guard informed LETA.
Eleven people were detained in Saliena Parish – ten Iraqi and one Syrian citizen who had previously crossed the state border illegally.
During the search, two Estonian citizens were also detained in the village of Silene, who provided persons with the opportunity to stay in Latvia illegally and transfer them further to other European Union countries. A case of illegal crossing of the state border was also detected on July 31 in Saliena parish, when the border guards detained one Indian and one Sri Lankan citizen.
In both cases, criminal proceedings have been initiated against a group of persons for intentional illegal crossing of the state border. Persons who have crossed the state border illegally have been placed in an accommodation center for detained foreigners in Daugavpils.
In turn, criminal proceedings have been initiated against both Estonian citizens for providing deliberate persons with the opportunity to stay in Latvia illegally. By the decision of the Rezekne court, security measures were applied to them – detention.
At present, there is no mass illegal crossing of the state border on the Latvian-Belarusian state border.
This year, five cases of illegal crossing of the Latvian-Belarusian state border have been detected and a total of 27 third-country nationals have been detained: 23 Iraqis, one Syrian, one Sri Lankan, one Indian and one Belarusian citizen.
Assessing the situation in Lithuania, as well as taking into account the growing risks on the Latvian-Belarusian state border, enhanced border surveillance has been introduced and State Border Guard resources have been mobilized to monitor the green border, as well as 24 national guards Frontex border and coast guard experts with two vehicles.
It has already been reported that the National Armed Forces have sent ground guards to the country’s eastern border since July 12 to step up measures to deter illegal immigration. The bodyguards were sent to the Latvian-Russian and Latvian-Belarusian borders.
This decision was made because in the past there was an increased flow of illegal migrants across the Lithuanian-Belarusian border. European politicians have allowed the flow of migrants from Belarus to take place with the support of the country’s leadership.
