Iraqi parliamentarians finally agree on new prime minister

Iraq gets a new prime minister after months of political squabbling. President Salih put Mohammed Tawfiq Allawi forward as successor to Prime Minister Mahdi, who offered his resignation in November last year. That reports the Iraqi state television.

Mahdi stepped up at the end of November because of the ongoing, fierce protests in his country. In the following months, the parties in the divided Iraqi parliament could not agree on his successor.

Reconciling words

On Wednesday, President Salih urged the Iraqi parliamentarians to come up with a prime minister candidate no later than today, otherwise he would choose one himself. Allawi eventually rolled out of the bus.

Via a video message on Twitter, Allawi told his dissatisfied countrymen that they should go on the state and that he would leave immediately if he felt he could not choose his own ministers.
