A Turkish unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that entered Iraqi airspace was shot down today in Kirkuk (north), reports the Reuters news agency citing sources from the country’s police and armed forces.
The drone crashed in the center of Kirkuk and caused a fire that threatened houses, but luckily there were no casualties, Iraqi police sources said. Thanks to the timely intervention of the fire department, the fire was quickly brought under control.
An Iraqi military statement said the drone was Turkish, but did not specify whether it was shot down by Iraqi air defenses. However, an Iraqi colonel – who asked not to be named – revealed that an examination of the wreckage showed that it was a Turkish military drone, which was armed.
The representative of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Oncu Keceli shared the announcement of the Iraqi army on the platform X (formerly Twitter), commenting: “We are working with the Iraqi authorities to shed light on every detail of the incident.” Ketseli did not confirm in his post whether the drone was Turkish.
But he added that “Turkey continues its fight against the terrorist organization that has nested in the territory of Iraq”, referring to the fighters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
