In Iraq, at least 44 people died on Tuesday night in a fire in the corona ward of a hospital. More than 67 people were injured. A medical worker said the raging fire had trapped many patients in the coronavirus ward and the rescue teams had been struggling to reach them. The accident occurred in the city of Nassiriya in the south of the country. The search for possible further victims in the al-Hussain hospital will continue. The fire has been brought under control, but thick smoke makes it difficult to enter some of the burned-out stations. According to initial findings, the cause of the fire was the explosion of an oxygen cylinder. A government statement said the hospital manager had been suspended and his arrest had been ordered. The Iraqi health system, which has been affected by war and sanctions, has so far only been able to cope with the corona pandemic with difficulty. So far, around 17,500 people have died in connection with the virus, and 1.4 million have been infected.
